The All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, emerges at the top of the national ranks by the central ministry of human resource development. It has other branches too in Bhubaneshwar, Jodhpur, Patna, Raipur, Rishikesh and Bhopal. But its Delhi branch is particularly singled out for this distinction.

AIIMS (D) set the pace for medical education and research in Southeast Asia as envisioned by the late prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Did you know that New Zealand donated towards setting up this August autonomous institution? Ever since, it has remained a landmark of national importance for its undergraduate and post graduate courses in medical education.

What can the students expect?
You can choose from 42 disciplines and expect the best professors to teach you. There are over 600 research publications by its faculty and researchers. In addition, AIIMS has a bachelor’s (hons.) course and issues nursing post-certificate degrees through its nursing college. Some of the degrees you can get at AIIMS include MBBS, MD, MS, MDS, MHA and M.Ch, DM, MCH, Ph.D (5 years), M.Sc, M. Biotechnology (2 years), among others. In addition, AIIMS offers super speciality courses in cardiology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, neurology, pediatric surgery and nephrology, among others.
Admissions to all these courses are through its own entrance examinations conducted across India.

What you will also appreciate about AIIMS is the research it undertakes. It acquires grants to apply advanced techniques like DNA recombinant tech, immunology, electron microscopy to study ailments afflicting humans. Similarly, the college library has lakhs of books, journals and reports in the biomedical sciences.

About applications
The AIIMS MBBS 2019 results are out in July 2019 every year. To qualify for admissions, you need to score a minimum of 50% marks in the entrance exam. For SC/ST/OBC candidates, it’s 40-45%. And remember, the NEET Score Card is not applicable for admission into the AIIMS. You have to take up its own Computer Based Test (CBT) that can be taken in English or Hindi. You can register online to apply for the institute. The last date is usually sometime in March every year. The MBBS exams are usually in May and the results are in June. The fees are under Rs 8000 for the entire course while the yearly packages for jobs offered on campus range from Rs 4-8 lakh. The institute also offers separate hostels for boys and girls in addition to a gym, tennis court, swimming pool, playground, volleyball and basketball courts.
