According to the National Institutional Ranking Framework of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur is in number 1 position under architecture this year. However, it is just as good in many other fields too.
You can apply for admissions into a myriad undergraduate and postgraduate courses in addition to doctorate researches. For the freshers, there are temporary dormitories available too. The subjects are varied too. From pursuing a course in agricultural, biological and medical sciences to chemical and material science to electrical and computational sciences, you have a lot to choose from. This includes Management, Mathematics, Architecture and Social Sciences, Mechanical and Structural sciences, and Physical and Earth Sciences.
Helping the university gain an edge over the others are its excellent research facilities. IIT Kharagpur is known for its quality and breadth of research wisdom, particularly for its penchant for multidisciplinary research. Towards this objective, it has upgraded its infrastructure to keep pace with the trends. The state of the art facilities are a testament to that. From the advanced VLSI laboratory to the Centre for Railway Research, Centre for Theoretical Studies, Computer and Informatics Centre, Membrane Separation Laboratory, Microfluidics and Microscale Transport Processes Laboratory, National Facility of Stable Isotope Geochemistry (NAFSIG), National Facility for Electron Probe Micro-Analysis (NAFEPMA), Rural Technology Action Group – Eastern India, and Security of Internet of Things Laboratory, among others.
IIT Kharagpur is also known for its megaprojects that are inclined towards science and technology and have a national focus, making them truly unique. Cases in point are four projects sponsored by the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India. These dwell on how to build future cities to leveraging biometric signal processing for affordable healthcare to using technology for food production, among others.
To encourage original and pathbreaking research in core engineering as well as cross-disciplinary fields, IIT Kharagpur has devised an extremely competitive scheme under which seed infrastructure grants are provided to individual faculty members, departments, and collaborative research groups. The institute provides funds up to Rs 25 lakh to new faculty members to acquire equipment and infrastructure pertinent to their research with an additional amount of Rs 3 lakh for consumables, contingency and so on.
Similarly, its Centre for Excellence in Robotics set up in 2015 is quite popular. If you are into micro/nano–scale transport processes, their Centre for Microfluidics is just the destination for you. And how can we forget their Centre for Artificial Intelligence for Societal Needs? If you want to use AI to solve problems in Energy, Climate, Water, Disaster Management and Traffic, this institute is just right for you.
Financial assistance is also available for the right candidate. Through this institute, you can pursue Academics, Accommodation, Research, Entrepreneurship and International Travel for Competitions. Close to 1000 students receive financial help from various corporations, foundations and external agencies. More than 1000 students receive scholarships on Merit-cum-Means. In addition, hundreds of Endowment Prizes and Free Tuitions are offered by the institute. There are also alumni-funded scholarships. And if you don’t want to depend on parents or scholarships, you can get loans from nationalised banks in the campus itself.
You have to write an entrance exam to qualify for admission here: the Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE). If you clear the test, you can apply for a four-year B.Tech (Bachelor of Technology) degree, a five-year B.Arch degree, a five-year Dual Degree (Integrated Bachelor & Master of Technology) or a five-year integrated M.Sc (Master of Sciences) at IIT Kharagpur. Details of the Joint Entrance Examination, registration and important dates and examination procedure can be found here.
