Success Stories: Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA)

The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) is right at the top of the National Institutional Ranking Framework by the Ministry of Human Resource Development. This is with good reason. Set up as part of a nation-building exercise by space scientist Dr Vikram Sarabhai and Kasturbhai Lalbhai with active participation by then Gujarat chief minister Dr Jivraj Mehta. That’s not all. Several industrialists, the Ford Foundation and the Harvard Business School were the other foundation stones of the institute that began functioning in 1961 under the Societies Act. In 2008, IIMA was the first management school in India to be given the EQUIS (European Quality Improvement System) accreditation by the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD).

The courses you can pursue
There are a range of disciplines you can pursue at IIMA including Fellow Programme in Management (FPM), Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP), Post Graduate Programme in Food and Agri-business Management (PGP-FABM), Post Graduate Programme in Management for Executives (PGPX), Faculty Development Programme (FDP), Armed Forces Programme (AFP), ePost Graduate Programme (ePGP), and Executive Education Programmes (EEP). What’s more, the premier institution has a personal and career development centre for all-round growth of its pupils. Importantly, the counselling and psychotherapy sessions are free of cost. For girl students, there is the Committee for Managing Gender Issues to ensure a harassment-free environment to all working and studying women of IIMA.

What’s new in 2019?
Come 2019 and IIMA is revamping its course to reflect the changing times. These are going to be even more industry-relevant. Students enrolling in 2019 can expect more role plays, live projects, experiential learning, outbound activities and interactive teaching sessions with not just the faculty but also the industry bigwigs. Machine learning and artificial intelligence will be some of the focus areas this year.

You have to write CAT for admission into any of the IIMs in the country. The last date for filing your application at IIMA is January 24, 2019. Select applicants will be called for a personal interview in March/April and the list of finalists will be out by end of April.

Fellowship Programmes
The Fellow Programme in Management (FPM) is the doctoral programme of IIMA. This course prepares students for a career in academia or research positions in industry. Candidates can apply in any of these areas for specialization: (1) Business Policy, (2) Economics, (3) Finance & Accounting, (4) Food & Agribusiness, (5) Human Resource Management, (6) Information Systems, (7) Innovation and Management in Education, (8) Marketing, (9) Organizational Behaviour, (10) Production and Quantitative Methods, and (11) Public Systems.
IIMA provides a comprehensive fellowship that covers all academic expenses, including tuition, computer, library, medical insurance, placement and alumni fees, in addition to a monthly subsistence allowance of Rs 32,800 (Slab A) for first and second years, Rs 35,400 (Slab B) after completing comprehensive examination and Rs 39,300 (Slab C) after submitting the TAC-approved thesis proposal.
A Contingency Allowance of Rs 25,000 per year (for five years) to cover research expenses, expenses on books, photocopying and so on, are also available. Those entitled get up to Rs 1,75,000 (upper limit) for attending international conference/workshop/summer school during their entire tenure (up to five years).
Since the FPM is a full time residential programme, bachelor accommodation is provided to all the students in dormitories. A fixed number of houses for married students are available on campus. For a full list of courses and other details, click HERE.
All-round development
IIMA attracts students who are not just proficient academically but are also talented in many other ways. There are several awards that recognize outstanding academic and non-academic achievements.
And finally…
Initially modeled as a business school, IIMA later took on the challenge of professionalizing not just business management but also management in several other priority sectors. Towards this mission, it set up a number of sector-oriented thrust groups termed ‘Centres’ to apply management science to other segments of the economy. They include: Centre for Innovation Incubation & Entrepreneurship (CIIE), India Gold Policy Centre (IGPC), Centre for Management of Health Services (CMHS), and IIMA-Idea Telecom Centre of Excellence (IITCoE).
