Success Stories: National Law School of India University

Having been around for over three decades, NLSIU is the number one law school in India. This government-run university, offers courses in B.A. LL.B, LL.D, LL.M and Ph.D. The beauty of this landmark institution is that you can also study long distance and acquire yourself a two-year master of business law that will set you back by Rs 64,000 while post graduate one-year diploma courses range from Rs 15,200-34,200. A full-time course fee for five years could range from Rs 1.38 lakh (LLM in Human Rights Law) to Rs 8.7 lakh (B.A LL.B honours).

Spread across 23 acres, it has hostel facilities for men and women too. Interestingly, the NLS also has an anti-ragging cell as well. In addition, it has an international training centre with accommodation arrangements for seminars, video conferencing and other programmes on the campus itself. Importantly, the faculty of NLS are known not just in India but abroad and have received several distinctions.

From winning national awards to social scientist citations to being appointed the vice chancellors of state universities, the achievements are too many to document. In addition, several books have been authored by the professors of NLS, on topics like price fixation, consumer protection, patients rights, war on human rights, and special courts, among others.

Located in Nagarbhavi, the chief justice of India is the Chancellor of the university. This makes it the only institute with the highest stature in legal circles.

How to get admitted?
You have to write a Common Law Entrance Test (CLAT) for admission into all the national law schools in India. Many students here have gone abroad for higher studies at landmark academic destinations like Oxford, Warwick, Harvard, Yale and so on. What has also helped here is the exchange programme that NLS has with the National University of Singapore, Osgoode Hall Law School, York University, Canada and Buceuius Law School, Germany.

On the charitable side, NLS has a Legal Services Clinic and a Centre for Women and the Law for the poor who need legal aid. In addition, scholarships are granted based on merit and economic disparity. For more details, you can click HERE.
